Chiefs to Acquire Giants WR Kadarius Toney

The Giants are already going from Kadarius Toney. Although they picked the sneaky wide receiver in the first round of 2021, the Giants are trading him to the Chiefs, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz said. tweet.

Kansas City sends a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick to New York for Toney, who has struggled with injuries again this season. While Toney showed promise when he was available, injuries largely prevented him from playing as a pro. The Giants will receive the third-round pick the Chiefs got for the Bears Ryan Poles GM rental, according to Albert Breer of SI.com (on Twitter). Third- and sixth-round picks for Giants will be 2023 picks, NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweet.

Toney trade rumors emerged briefly this offseason, but the Giants shut them down. At the time, Big Blue’s new regime was keen to see what Toney looked like in an offense that also housed Saquon Barkley. As Barkley returned to top form, Toney came off the starting blocks. Both hamstring injuries have plagued Toney this season – one with just 35 offensive snaps – and one Joe SchoenBrian Daboll regime that did not enlist him will cut the bait.

Quadriceps and oblique injuries sidelined the Florida alum for a combined seven games last season — including a Toney game at Arrowhead Stadium — and an ankle condition forced him out of another game. Toney missed much of training camp last year with a hamstring injury and underwent a knee exam in the offseason. The Chiefs are taking a gamble here, but the 6-foot wide showed top-notch athleticism in his brief appearance as a healthy receiver.

Toney caught 39 passes for 420 yards last year, showing quick after-catch rushing ability. He had a big impact in the Giants’ upset win over the Saints – a six-catch, 89-yard performance – and stunned the Cowboys for 10 receptions and 189 yards the following week. Illustrating Toney’s booming career thus far, this game also included Toney throwing a punch at then-Cowboys safety. Damontae Kazee. Toney was also kicked out of a Giants practice for throwing a punch last year.

In Florida, Toney zoomed on the first-round radar with a senior season of 70 catches, 984 yards and 10 touchdowns alongside Kyle Pitts. Prior to this season, however, the 2021 Giants’ investment was no more than 300 yards in a college campaign. The Chiefs don’t have much sample size to go on here, but they have looked to a first-round Giants in the recent past. Giants cut 2019 first-round cornerback Deandre Baker, after an offseason arrest, and the Chiefs ended up adding him. The Chiefs are obviously aiming higher with Toney, as Baker didn’t make much of an impact during his time in Missouri.

Toney, 23, is signed through the 2024 season and can be kept on his rookie contract through 2025 via the fifth-year option, although we’re obviously far from worthy of an option. The Giants will save $1.2 million off the cap by making the move, which comes after the Chiefs created some cap space by restructuring Travis Kelcefor the second time in 2022. Kansas City still has a third-rounder in next year’s draft, as well as two quarterbacks. In the long run, however, the Giants will avoid more than $5 million in salary payments to Toney.

Toney, who hasn’t played since Week 2, will have a bit more time to acclimate to Andy Reidthe offence. The Chiefs are in their bye week. Kansas City Traded Tyreek Hill this offseason, leading to an overhaul of its receiving corps. Free Agency Additions Ju Ju Smith Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling lead the Chiefs’ offense, and each is coming off 100-yard games in San Francisco. The Chiefs also line up Mecole Hardmanwho is in a contract year, and drafted Skyy Moore in the second round of this year. Moore struggled early in his rookie campaign, and the Chiefs have been linked to both Odell Beckham Jr. and brandin cooks before the deadline. This Toney trade could take KC out of the OBJ contest, as he looms somewhere between a flier and a blockbuster move due to the compensation involved.

The Giants, who hoped to draft DeVonta Smith instead of Toney in 2021, entered the offseason with a packed reception hall. But this band didn’t play together much. Massive free agency disappointment Kenny Golladay still came out with an MCL sprain. The Giants’ hopes to trade the former Lions Pro Bowler have come up against expected contractual hurdles. The team also lost its oldest gap, Sterling Shepardfor the season.

Going forward, Big Blue has Darius Slayton and Wan’ Dale Robinson in place as its main targets. Slayton rising to such a high is interesting, given his recent spot in the trading block after an offseason that saw his stock plummet to the point that he took a pay cut. But that trade should make expanding the contract year a bigger deal while making the wide receiver a major Giants need in 2023.
